Caffeine Helpful or Harmful

Everyone consumes drugs. This is quite shocking for many people. However, if you have had ever tasted a cup of coffee, cup of tea, a piece of dark chocolate, a soft drink, well you have tasted one of the most common and world wide used drugs, which is caffeine. Few people might argue that caffeine is not a drug. However, medically, caffeine is defined as a chemical that has the capacity to alter mood, perception and thought process. Many health professionals continue to raise fingers on the safety of consumption of caffeine even with its popularity world wide. So it becomes very important to know the uses and affects of caffeine on the human body.

Studies have shown that caffeine actually has a good effect on respiratory system. It has shown to help reduce certain respiratory problems like asthma. It is said caffeine is the chemical cousin of the drug that is used to treat asthma. This drug is supposed to widen the air paths leading to asthma relaxation.

Caffeine is also found to have positive effect on blood vessels of the brain, especially when the brain is swollen and is throbbing. As caffeine works on blood vessels and constrains them, it helps in reduction of pain or even removes the headache completely. Drinking coffee and other beverages with caffeine are linked to reduce risk of type 2 diabetes. This was proved when a study was conducted on 126,000 men and women. As per the study, men and women who did not consume coffee had more chances of developing type 2 diabetes than those who consumed coffee or beverages with caffeine.

One another advantage of caffeine is its ability to avoid or stop skin cancer. Studies have shown good results of caffeine on mice with skin tumor. After caffeine was rubbed over the mice’s skin, the tumor was considerably reduced as the caffeine killed the cancer cells.

The disadvantages of caffeine are some how limited. It is seen that women are at most risk when it comes to caffeine as it is associated with conception and development of unborn child. It is said that a woman who consumes more than 3 cups of coffee have shown delayed labor and women who consumed 5 or more cups of coffee during pregnancy had doubled the risk of miscarriage.

Caffeine is found to be very addictive substance. However, a proper study on this has not yet been established about the caffeine addition. Caffeine addiction would be seen only if a person consumes more than 100 mg a day, but amount lesser than 100 mg is not found to be addictive.

There are still studies going on the effects of caffeine. Americans, till date showing the withdrawal symptoms like headache, fatigue, inability to concentrate, vomiting and nausea when trying to stop consumption of caffeine. Whether, its affect is addictive or not, more than 2 cups a day is not an ideal thing to consume. In fact, any substance consumed more than required become poisonous to human body, no matter how useful it is to the body in lower levels.
