Ketogenic diet is a diet consisting of low carbohydrates, high fats and adequate amounts of proteins. Basically this type of diet is used in the treatment of children with epilepsy and also used popularly for weight loss programs. This diet apes few unorthodox methods of starvation by forcing fat to burn rather than carbs. Normally, the body metabolism generates glucose as a fuel to the body and brain from carbs. If these carbs are restricted then the liver is forced to convert fat in to fatty acids and ketone bodies. Ketone bodies are then passed on to brain and are used as a fuel.
This diet is basically calculated to have adequate amount of protein in the body to help in repair and growth of the body mass and also aid in maintain of the correct body weight as per height and age. The classic Ketogenic diet suggests 4 : 1 ration; 4 parts fats and 1 part protein kind of a diet.
